As enterprises focus on perceived "core functions," more activities are outsourced to third party providers of goods and services. This extended supply chain of manufacturers of products-- from raw materials; work in process (WIP) all the way through "store-ready" products -- comprises a complex combination of functions performed in different geographic locations. The common thread from source to consumption is logistics -- the intricate process of moving goods and information, in compliance with a global environment of rules, regulations and customer requirements.
